About Us
To
promote a better framework for science education by emphasizing
scientific reasoning and critical thinking in order to facilitate
the conceptual development of Oklahoma students and their
understanding of science.
- To
enhance public awareness of the Conference Report of the No Child
Left Behind Act of 2001 that states, "The Conferees recognize that a
quality science education should prepare students to distinguish the
data and testable theories of science from religious or
philosophical claims that are made in the name of science. Where
topics are taught that may generate controversy (such as biological
evolution), the curriculum should help students to understand the
full range of scientific views that exist, why such topics may
generate controversy, and how scientific discoveries can profoundly
affect society.
- To ensure that State Science Standards are not used to censor debate on controversial
issues in science, including current forms of Darwin's theory of evolution. (
When such debates are disallowed, students are more likely to be indoctrinated in an exclusive philosophical
claim rather than to be freely educated in science.)
- To ensure that Oklahoma school districts and their science teachers are advised of their legal rights, through
Constitutional law, that permits teaching competing or divergent scientific theories of origin.
